The Future of Our Rural Parishes:

What Is Your Role?

Much of the Diocese of Lincoln is rural.  How do we prepare for the future in those areas?  Most importantly we need to pray for God’s guidance.  Additionally, our own actions and proper planning will allow each family to have role in the future of the Diocese of Lincoln. The season of Lent is a great time to renew our faith and our mission in the Church to welcome our Risen Lord.  Plan to attend this conference on February 28 to learn about your role in stewardship, planned giving and end of life issues. The conference is here at St. Patrick Church, starting at 2:00pm & ending with Mass celebrated by Bishop Bruskewitz at 6:00PM.

CHURCH LAWS OF FAST & ABSTINENCE:

FASTING -- means eating only one full meal with two smaller meals, which together do not equal the full meal.  No snacks or eating between meals allowed.  Fasting  obliges all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59.

ABSTINENCE -- means eating no meat, and no soup or gravy made from meat. Abstinence  obliges all Catholics over the age of 14.

Sickness, hard manual labor, pregnancy, etc, automatically excuse one from these obligations.  Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that these are serious obligations. In cases of doubt or question, the priest who hears a persons confessions should be consulted.

OTHER -- Lenten practices such as family rosary recitation, daily Bible or other spiritual reading, avoiding luxuries, snacks, television viewing, attending weekday Mass when possible, and donating money and time to help the poor and the Church are encouraged.

YOUNG ADULT CATHOLICS -- (YAC) meets Tuesday, February 24th at 7:00pm at Weber’s, 910 West 4th Street, for a Mardi Gras evening!!

LITTLE BLACK BOOKS B Six minute reflections on  the Weekly Gospels of Lent 2009.  Now available at the entrances to the Church (one per family please).  This book is dedicated to Bishop Ken Untener (1937-2004) who was inspired to create the Little Books. AThis Little Black Book is your companion for Lent.  It’s an old-fashioned “Vademecum” (pronounced vahdaymaykum).  That’s Latin for “travel with me” and the name was used for a book that was a constant companion – perhaps a condensed book of rituals and prayers for traveling priests.

RICE BOWL – Since 1975, Operation Rice Bowl has inspired Catholics in the U.S. to pray, fast, learn and give as we increase our understanding of our global community.  We will connect this understanding with the principles of Catholic Social Teaching throughout our Lenten journey.  We encourage you to participate in Operation Rice Bowl at home with your family and loved ones.
